This book introduces Australia's magnificent and ancient tropical rainforests, recognised as one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth. The history and importance of Australia's tropical rainforest, as well as the huge plant and animal diversity, is outlined in the introduction. The book also provides some basic ecological information about many of the secretive animals that inhabit this world such as the Southern Cassowary, the Musky Rat Kangaroo, Tree Kangaroos and Tiger Quolls. Many of the animals featured in the book are rare or threatened or are considered significant to Australia's tropical rainforests.
Dr Martin Cohen has worked as a biologist and wildlife commentator in Australia's tropics for over 20 years. After completing a PhD in zoology, Martin has concentrated on presenting fascinating information about wildlife and the natural world to people from all walks of life. A renowned writer, photographer and wildlife advocate, Martin is also still involved with research and presents information about wildlife and the tropical environment on television and radio. Based in Cairns, Martin's extensive experience and knowledge of tropical Australia and its wildlife means that there is no one better to guide people through this mystical world.
Born in England, Julia Cooper grew up in the wildlife filming industry and was completely immersed in wildlife and its portrayal. Julia has completed an Honours degree and worked on numerous popular BBC wildlife programs. After moving to North Queensland several years ago, Julia quickly developed an excellent knowledge of Australia's tropical wildlife. With her passion for all things great and small, Julia is a key wildlife advocate for the region and has the ability to explain complex biological processes in a simple, uncomplicated way. Martin and Julia own and operate a wildlife education and interpretation business based in Cairns called Wild about Australia.
It hardly seems fair that in a few moments, we can savour an array of information and stunning images that have taken Martin and Julia many patient (and enthusiastic) hours to gather. But the best thing is, this is only an appetizer - a wonderful introduction to the lifetime feast of discovery we can enjoy as we each learn to respect and protect our tropical rainforest heritage.
