Many of the effects of global warming, changing temperature and rainfall patterns, have been recognized as climate change factors affecting agriculture, and these climate trends are expected to adversely affect crops in most agricultural regions in coming decades and be only partly compensated by increased CO2 concentrations and improved environments in northern latitudes and high altitudes, with net overall depression of yield. Global climate change therefore calls for advancements in crop genetic diversity, to develop genotypes which can adapt to a variety of complex climate changes and withstand less than ideal growing conditions.

The first two sections provide a foundation on the factors involved in climate stress, assessing current climate change by region and covering crop physiological responses to these changes.
