About this book

The fourth volume in the series covering Nymphalidae deals with the subfamily Apaturinae.

From the foreword:
"This volume, the 14th of the series Guide to the Butterflies of the Palearctic Region, is the first one with a Japanese author and, taking into consideration all the support that we had from Gerardo Lamas (Lima, Peru), it is really the result of a multi-continent cooperation. The second novelty is that, unlike the previous volumes of the series, here we have tried to list all the names ever given to any palearctic Apaturinae butterfly species, subspecies or individual form, including their original combination, bibliographic references and type locality, as quoted by the authors. Some of the taxonomic decisions that we have taken through the book, particularly with the Apatura genus subspecies, were difificult and are certainly liable for criticism. Anyway we have tried to make available to the reader all the information, that will eventually help to build any taxonomic arrangement different from our one. Some of the Apaturinae genera have a more or less relevant part of their range in the Oriental region, out of the area covered by this guide. Therefore those genera are only partially covered in the book. But, in order to give the largest possible picture, we have included all the species and subspecies that somehow reach the Palearctic region, even if only at the borders of the Chinese transition area. Furthermore we have included most of the subspecies that are found just out of the Palearctic region, as in Taiwan or at the Himalayas foothills."
