About this book

Hampshire is a rich county botanically with a wide range of habitats, each with its special plants. The Hampshire Rare Plant Register provides an inventory of locations and detailed records for over 400 nationally or locally rare or threatened flowering plants and ferns. This book, written by the two Hampshire Recorders for the Botanical Society of the British Isles, enables conservationists and land managers to avoid inadvertent losses by informing them precisely where plants occur, and allows researchers and plant-lovers to track the fortunes of species of most concern. It provides a baseline from which changes can be assessed and studies extended, and will be supplemented by updates published on the Web.

Introductory sections cover the scope of the species accounts, the criteria for inclusion, the habitats for rare plants and their prospects for survival. The main text gives brief accounts of each species' occurrence in both South and North Hampshire, combined in most cases with records for every known site, concentrating on those made after 1986. In some cases, where a plant qualifies for inclusion on national grounds but is not scarce in Hampshire, distribution is shown by 1-km dot maps.
