The most beautiful chamois of the world; This is the uncompromising way in which the Apennine chamois Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata is described. A distinct subspecies that lives in the mountains of Abruzzo where, miraculously, it had escaped extinction at the beginning of the 20th century. Very little was known about the life of this symbol of Apennine wild nature, perfectly adapted to a world of sheer rock walls and steep slopes, and able to survive both the capriciousness of the mountain climate and ambushes of bears, wolves and eagles. At least this was the case until the ethologist Sandro Lovari undertook his first fundamental studies in the early 70s. Since then, Lovari and his team have followed, with a deep passion, the "people of the rocks."

This same "chamois fever" has afflicted photographer Bruno D'Amicis, who has roamed the mountains of the Central Apennines since childhood, devoting over ten years to documenting both the biology of the species and the environment it inhabits. In this photographic work D'Amicis' many stunning images and accounts of emotions experienced in the field are enriched by the authoritative contributions of Sandro Lovari and by the liveliness of Stefano Maugeri's unique illustrations. This book is intended to be, first and foremost, a tribute to the beauty of this animal, a treasure of Italian nature and an ambassador for the precious natural heritage of the Apennines and a reminder of the need to protect them in their entirety.
