About this book

Systematics is a fast changing subject. Taxonomic changes at the generic and specific level are taking place at a rapid pace and the taxonomic designations get outdated and invalid. Though the amphibian taxonomy of peninsular India is better acknowledged, that of North East India is little known. The present work is an effort towards filling the vacuum in this regard.

Dutta (1997) initiated bibliographical studies of the amphibians of India in his elaborate work "Amphibians of India and Sri Lanka (Checklist and Bibliography)" which was followed by a checklist of amphibians of India by Das and Dutta in 1998 and further updated by Daniels (2001).

India's North East is one of the hot spots of bio-diversity and its Amphibian Fauna though worked out to a moderate extent is yet to be thoroughly explored. Chanda in his monograph (1994) reported 54 species of anurans from this region. Dutta in his aforesaid checklist and bibliography (1997) reported 69 species including one species each of caudata and gymnophiona.
