About this book

Language: German

Covers 94 species of mammal (including 30 species of bat) found in Switzerland.

This book offers four different ways of identifying mammals and an introduction to genetic species identification. The first of the four keys relies on the application of external morphological characters and should therefore be particularly useful in the field. A summary table with information on the dentition formula and the body mass for each species completes this chapter. The second key, based on skull morphology, was designed for home or laboratory identification of finds.

These two chapters are completed by two more keys, one based on identifying footprints, the other on faeces, which is a new approach. All identification keys are structured in such a way that each step of the identification only offers two possible answers, which are mutually exclusive (dichotomy). The recorded characteristics and body mass are essentially based on information collected in Switzerland. The last chapter shows a photograph for each species, supplemented with information about their occurrence and altitudinal distribution in Switzerland. In addition to the scientific name, the species names are also entered here in the four national languages.

The work fills an important gap in our knowledge of mammals in Switzerland. It is aimed first of all at professionals dealing with wild fauna (zoologists, ecologists, rangers, etc.) and those working in the field of biology (teachers, students, etc.). The book is also aimed at people who are more closely interested in wild animals (nature lovers, hunters, rangers, guides, nature photographers, etc.), but it is also intended to be of useful help to people who are generally interested in nature.
