About this book

This publication updates the 2012 version of Keys to the Seaweeds and Seagrasses of Southeast Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. These new keys cover all species, subspecies, and varieties reported from Cape Spencer, Alaska (58° 15’ N, 136° 45‘ W) to the Oregon-Califomia border (42° 00’ N, 124° 15’ W). In this marine macrophyte flora there are 671 taxa (species, subspecies and varieties) in 284 genera: miscellaneous Ocrophytes, 2 taxa in 2 genera; xanthophytes (Xanthophyceae), 4 taxa in 1 genus; green algae (Chlorophyta), 112 taxa in 37 genera; brown algae (Phaeophyceae), 144 taxa in 70 genera; red algae (Rhodophyta), 403 taxa in 171 genera; and seagrasses (Anthophyta), 6 taxa in 3 genera. There continue to be significant changes in our understanding of the species and genera of benthic marine macroalgae occurring in this region, and this revision incorporates those changes through 2017.

In addition to name changes, in the green algae, we exclude Chaeromorpha brachygona and Gomontia polyrhiza from the flora and add species in Acrosiphonia and Spongomorpha. In the brown algae, we recognize updated taxonomy in Desmarestia, Ecklonia, Saccharina, Scytosiphon and the Agaraceae (formerly Costariaceae), and we exclude Laminaria farlowii from the flora pending verifiable collections. In the red algae, we exclude from the flora Grateloupia doryphora and Membranoptera weeksiae; we incorporate newly recognized or resurrected species in Bossiella, Callophyllis, Ceramium, Chiharaea, Cumathamnion, Devaleraea, Mazzaella (including making the new combination M. parvula (Kjellman) P.W. Gabrielson, S.C.Lindstrom, Hughey & Hommersand), Pikea, Predaea, Ptilota, and Schizymenia and include the new or resurrected genera, some with new species,    Callilithophyrum, Crusticorallina, Fredericqia, Johansenia, Kallymenicola, Melanolhamnus, Neopolyporolithon, Polyostea, Rhododrewia, Rubrointrusa and Symphyocladia. We also recognize Grateloupia postelsii as a later synonym of G. californica.
