Unlike other Andalusian wetlands, the Guadalhorce River Mouth Nature Place is located within the urban footprint of the city of Malaga. This is unique since most wetlands in Andalusia are often found amidst agricultural surroundings. The Guadalhorce River Mouth is most important for its high bird diversity. Despite its small size (70 hectares), the area contains an elevated proportion of the bird species found in Andalusia.
Guadalhorce River Mouth Nature Site: Birding Map illustrates the high value of this area for birds. The authors describe the seasonal variation in the appearance of 70 of the more commonly observed bird species, illustrated here, as well as descriptions of the status of 244 bird species resident in the area. This work compiles the most up-to-date and comprehensive list of bird species found here.
