About this book

This latest book by Bill Trobe represents the fruition of an idea he has had in mind for some years. He makes the point that when he began collecting omithological literature, the cost of books both new and secondhand amounted to only a pound or two and to pay more than a 'fiver' was exceptional. Times have changed and now the cost of sought after books in dealers' catalogues often runs close to or even exceeds three figures.

One of the pleasures of a specialised library is the opportunity to choose particular volumes at will and enjoy again favourite passages describing the exploits of others with similar interests to oneself. The convenience of having a number of such passages together in one volume is self-evident.

This book offers a selection of 34 pieces from various ornithological works, most of which are now expensive and/or difficult to obtain. Although a degree of personal preference is unavoidable in an anthology of this nature, every effort has been made to select a variety of accounts which will appeal to all with an interest in breeding birds and in particular birdnesting.

For instance, if one can imagine being in the company of Maud Haviland searching for nests of rare waders on the Siberian tundra just before the outbreak of the First World War, or be with Captain John McNeile seeking nests of the crimson-winged finch in a volcanic crater in Turkey, in addition to participating in various bird nesting expeditions in places between, then this is the book for you – the ideal Christmas
present!
