The first prototype of the Norfolk Bat Brick was designed in 1984 to aid in overcoming a shortage of hibernation crevices for bats in suitable habitats. Since then the design has been carefully optimised to maximise the efficacy of the brick for attracting and protecting crevice hibernating species such as Daubenton's, Natterer's, Brown Long-eared, Brandts, Whiskered and Barbastelle bats. They have been deployed in thousands of locations across the UK with great success, commonly attracing between one and three bats per brick.
Norfolk bat bricks are intended for use primarily in dark, damp places with little disturbance, such as under bridges, in caves or in tunnels. The bricks can be used during repairs to existing brick structures, or built in to concrete facings. Norfolk bat bricks are handmade from clay and kiln fired to high temperatures to ensure that they are frost-proof.
Please note: These bricks are not designed to provide entry into a cavity as they are sealed across the back, but they are excellent hibernation recesses for the species listed above. To provide entry tunnels for bats into cavities or roof spaces, please see our Bat Bricks or Bat Access Tiles.
