About this book

This contribution to the series Arctic and Alpine Fungi contains 25 species collected in the Arctic, on the main island Spitsbergen of the Svalbard archipelago. Most of the species also occur in alpine regions of Europe. Some have a circumpolar distribution, and some, or close relatives, are also present in the Antarctic. Photographs were taken «in situ» on Svalbard, August 7-14,1986 by K. M. Jenssen.

One new species, Agaricus arcticus, is described, and the new combination Alnicola tantilla (Favre) Gulden is proposed. Two other species, Clitocybe paxillus and Fayodia arctica, are described in Sydowia 40 (Gulden, 1988).

As in the first volume, the authors record only microscopic features from the collection photographed. This may mean the variation in the species is not fully covered. The descriptions of gross morphology, however, usually contain data from more than one collection, from Svalbard, or other locations, and sometimes also from the literature. Colour codes refer to Cailleux (1981). Herbarium designations follow Hohngren et al. (1981). The material is curated in the Botanical Museum, University of Oslo (O). Distribution is mostly given in general terms, without references to every source, but generally to some publication(s) where detailed information can be found. Only the most commonly used, or important synonyms are cited.
