45 pages, colour photos, colour & b/w distribution maps
50 years of Mapping the British and Irish Flora 1962-2012 was prepared for the 2012 BSBI conference 'A great leap forward – Biological Recording since the 1962 Atlas of the British Flora'. Illustated in full colour, 50 years of Mapping the British and Irish Flora 1962-2012 provides the background to the genesis of the Atlas, it's successes and limitations and the initiatives that arose from it in the subsesquent decades. This is covered in 3 sections: mapping the national distribution of plants; studying the flora at finer scales than the original hectad maps; other aids to interpretation of the maps that have developed over time. Each section is complemented by a selection of maps.
It is hoped that 50 years of Mapping the British and Irish Flora 1962-2012 will inspire recorders to plan their future work, and be of interest to not just professional botanists but a wide audience of biologists, conservationists, policy makers and amateurs.
