There are fossil shells dating back to 600 million years. This book gives a brief overview of the structure, morphology, systematics, ecology and phylogeny of the enormous diversity within fossil shells.

Fossile Muscheln sind mindestens seit dem Kambrium, also seit etwa 500 bis 600 Millionen Jahren, bekannt. Sie gehören damit zu den frühen Bewohnern unserer Erde. Im Lauf der Erdgeschichte haben die Muscheln zahllose Wandlungen erfahren, die zu einer großen Formenmannigfaltigkeit führten. So finden wir gelegentlich fossile Muscheln, die in ihrer Gehäuseform vom gewöhnlichen Habitus einer Muschel stark abweichen. Interessante Probleme ergeben sich im Zusammenhang mit der Herkunft der Mollusken, einem Vergleich der Systematiken fossiler und rezenter Muscheln, den zahlreichen Homöomorphien u. a. Der vorliegende Band der Neuen Brehm-Bücherei gibt eine kurze Übersicht über Aufbau, Morphologie, Systematik, Ökologie und Stammesgeschichte der fossilen Muscheln und deren Bedeutung für die geologische Forschung. In Wort und Bild werden wichtige Gattungen vorgestellt, die jedoch aus der ungeheuren Fülle fossiler Muschelgattungen nur eine kleine Auswahl darstellen können.
