About this book

Language: German

Diseases of horses on grass are common today. Symptoms range from laminitis to fatal poisoning. The causes are often unclear, however, but are sometimes subject matter of claims for compensation. While until now fructans, i.e. herbal sugars, have been made responsible for many diseases, the author demonstrates the weakness of the fructan hypothesis. So far, the natural resistances of most cultivated grass species, which are based on toxins produced by endophytes, have been largely neglected in Europe. In the United States and Australia, these dangerous systemic toxins are an important topic and laboratories in these countries already provide routine examinations of grass samples. In Europe, however, this is not yet possible without difficulty.

The intention of the present book is to provide comprehensive knowledge to all interested parties – horse keepers, veterinaries, experts, lawyers – and to inspire the research and analysis of endophytes. An extensive literature list on detection techniques for endophytes and their toxins should help the laboratories to get started.
