About this book

The occurrence and description of wetlands in India with reference to those around the world is detailed in a sequential manner from local, provincial, regional, and national to global scenario in Wetlands and Lakes of the World. The book also deals with a systematic, sequential and comprehensive treatment of the Limnology (physico-chemical and biological features) and Fisheries of the Wetlands in India and is well supported by author's original data. As Limnology and Fishery Science are interlinked, this book attempts to provide a holistic view of both the fields, along with their methodologies. The book has numerous examples from the local environment that go along with the explained theoretical concepts. Furthermore, a unique feature of Wetlands and Lakes of the World is that it deals with the protocols of various Limnological methodologies, thus, making it a handy guide for lab and field studies. The book has distinguished itself by incorporating chapter based on Global Information System or GIS. Wetlands and Lakes of the World also has an up to date Bibliography and summary at the end of each chapter with text on various aspects, particularly, generally not much dealt with aspects like fisherfolk, their fish catching devices, fishing centers, fish markets and, above all, their socio-economic conditions supported by author's original data.

Dr. Devashish Kar is one of the pioneer researchers in India in the field of Wetlands, Rivers, Fisheries and Aquaculture. He completed his Master's Programme from University of Gauhati with specialization in Fishery Science and Aquaculture. He had been awarded PhD by the University of Gauhati for his outstanding work in the 'Beel' (wetlands) fishery of Assam. On a prestigious British Council Study Fellowship Award, Dr. Kar was in King's College, University of London, for a 9 month's duration Advanced training in Science Education. Dr. Kar had been awarded with the prestigious Biotechnology National Associateship (BNA) by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India (GOI), for his pioneering researches in the field of Fish Disease, particularly, in tackling the dreadful Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) Fish disease in India and for conducting further researches in defining EUS in collaboration with National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.

As Convener, Dr. Kar has organized a number of National and International Symposia and Workshops, in the field of Wetlands, Fisheries and Aquaculture including Ornamental Fishes, in collaboration with DBT, DST, CSIR, ICAR, MOEF, UGC, MPEDA; and, being attended by eminent scientific personalities like, Professor Asis Datta, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Professor Samir Bhattacharyya, Ex-Director, Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Calcutta; Dr. K.C. Jayaram, Ex-Joint Director of the Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta; and, so on. Dr. Kar has presented papers and chaired scientific sessions in a large number of National and International Symposia, both in India and Abroad, notably, the Gordon Research Conference in USA during 1999; 2nd International Symposium on GIS/Spatial analysis in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, held in England during 2002. He also has 122 publications in many National and International journals. As President of Conservation Forum, Dr Kar has made a profound contribution to the Society in Environment-related works in collaboration with Professor Madhav Gadgil of the Indian Institute of Science (Retd.), Bangalore.

In addition to Editor of the Conservation Forum Journal, Dr. Kar is a Scientific Fellow of the Zoological Society of London and a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London; Fellow of the Zoological Society, Calcutta, Fellow of the Applied Zoologists Research Association; Fellow of the Society of Environmental Biologists, Fellow of the Inland Fisheries Society of India, and so on.
