Das Kompendium der Vögel Mitteleuropas has long been the established reference work for professional and amateur ornithologists. The second edition was completely revised by reknowned specialists, resulting in a new work that provides a comprehensive overview not only on presence, biology and distribution, but also on population trends, threats and conservation of Germany's birds. The structure of the work is based on the latest systematic-taxonomic lists, and their changes compared with the previous taxonomy are first explained and justified here. All distribution maps were recreated for this second edition and contain detailed information about the breeding distribution and the transit and winter areas north of the Sahara.

The first volume of the work includes the species chapters to all orders grouped together as the non-passerines, while the second volume deals with the passerines.

This here is the third volume and includes the complete bibliography of the first two volumes containing the species chapters, and additional information about the ocurrence of introduced species in Central Europe, Red Lists and conventions for the protection of birds. A detailed list of informs the reader of the common names of birds in several Central European languages, ​​and a glossary explains the most important occurring terms in the business. Finally there is an index of the names of all birds treated in the three volumes.

Das Kompendium der Vögel Mitteleuropas ist seit Jahren das bewährte Nachschlagewerk für den Fach- und Hobbyornithologen. Die zweite Auflage wurde von bekannten Spezialisten vollständig neu bearbeitet, so dass hier ein neues Werk entstanden ist, das einen umfassenden Überblick nicht nur über Vorkommen, Biologie und Verbreitung, sondern auch über Bestandsentwicklungen, Gefährdung und Schutz unserer Vogelwelt bietet. Der Aufbau des Werkes orientiert sich an der neuesten systematisch-taxonomischen Liste, deren Veränderungen gegenüber der bisherigen Taxonomie hier erstmals erläutert und begründet werden. Alle Verbreitungskarten wurden für diese zweite Auflage neu erstellt und enthalten detaillierte Informationen zur Brutverbreitung sowie zu den Durchzugs- und Wintergebieten nördlich der Sahara.

Der erste Band des Werkes enthält die Artkapitel zu allen Ordnungen außer den Sperlingsvögeln, die als Gruppe der „Nonpasseriformes” zusammengefasst wurden. Im zweiten Band wird die große Gruppe der Passeriformes, der Sperlingsvögel, abgehandelt.

Der hier vorliegende dritte Band umfasst das komplette Literaturverzeichnis zu den beiden ersten Bänden mit den Artkapiteln sowie zusätzliche Informationen zu den in Mitteleuropa aufgetretenen Neozoen, Roten Listen und Konventionen zum Schutz der Vögel. Eine ausführliche Liste informiert über die Trivialnamen der Vögel in den mitteleuropäischen Sprachen und in einem Glossar werden die wichtigsten in dem Werk vorkommenden Fachbegriffe erklärt. Den Abschluss bildet ein Register der Namen aller in den drei Bänden behandelten Vögeln.
