Antonie Augustus Bruijn entered the service of the Koninklijke Marine (Royal Dutch Navy) at an early age, as this was tradition in his family. After ten years of his dedication to the Royal Dutch Navy, Bruijn was honourably discharged in 1867. After his retirement, he moved to Ternate, one of the most important harbour in Indonesia, in which he stayed several times during his service in the Navy.
In Ternate, A. A. Bruijn was known as a trader in naturalia. During his life in Ternate, he found many new species as well birds as other animals, which later were named after Bruijn. This made him have a great contribution in increasing knowledge on biology. Biographical Notes of Antoine Augustus Bruijn (1842-1890) answers the question who Antonie Augustus Bruijn actually is.
