About this book

This glossary of woodland terms includes those terms that have been recorded in woodland account books and surveys over the centuries and sometimes confirmed by personal recollection. The glossary stems from more than 30 years of archive research mainly in Sheffield Archives. In that record office are deposited the estate records of a number of major South Yorkshire landowners who were important woodland owners. These include the Duke of Norfolk (whose estate records comprise the Arundel Castle Manuscripts (ACM). Harrison's survey of the manor of Sheffield in 1637 is also an important source as are Gapping, Raddling and Snaggings of mainly medieval documents published by T. Walter Hall in the early part of the last century. All the sources of information from primary sources are itemized in the text and full details of secondary sources can be found in the bibliography at the end of the glossary.
