Papers presented at the Regional Seminar on Environmental Problems: Extinction of Biological Species in North East India, held at Shillong on 17th September 2009.
Meghalaya has a rich diversity of flora and fauna. lf we are not careful and aware, many plants and animals we see around us today are going to be destroyed; lost and extinct as a result of human activities. We are living in a period of unprecedented loss of biological diversity and the overwhelming cause of all this loss is the rapidly expanding human population and its rising material consumption.
Disturbances caused by human activities have altered, degraded and destroyed the landscape on a large scale, driving species to the point of extinction. The loss of these inconspicuous species may prove to be devastating to the region and its inhabitants because
of the role such species play in recycling nutrients and maintaining a healthy balance environment. All species represent unique biological solutions to the problem of survival and interact in complex ways as parts of natural communities. The loss of one species
may have far reaching consequences for other members of the community.
