This Butterfly and Bug House combines shelter and a feeding station for a variety of butterflies and other nectar-eating insects. It is manufactured from solid FSC certified timber, and provides a variety of cavities for roosting or can be filled with straw to provide insulation and a much-needed safe place for hibernating. The feeding station of the Butterfly and Bug House comprises a large central tray for fruit and other nectar rich food, and has 4 smaller feeding bowls for use with liquid butterfly feed or well mixed sugar water. The feeding station has been painted with ultraviolet attractor paint to attract butterflies. There is a viewing window in the side so that you can see if insects or butterflies are roosting in the box.
Site the feeder/habitat in a warm sheltered position, out of prevailing winds, ideally to catch the morning sun. The box can be fixed to a tree, fence or similar, or can be positioned on a flat surface in amongst a flowerbed.
The box can be inspected in late autumn / winter for hibernating butterflies and the feeder cups should be filled in particular in early spring and late summer when natural nectar sources are scarce. The box should not require any external maintenance.
