La fauna malacológica colombiana terrestre y dulceacuícola, aunque rica y di-versa, descrita en múltiples publicaciones dispersas generadas desde comienzos del siglo XIX, se conoce hoy pobremente. En general, la totalidad de colecciones realizadas en nuestro país, a partir de las que se describieron y nominaron nuevas especies o se ampliaron rangos de distribución, se encuentran depositadas en mu-seos de Europa y Estados Unidos, y en contadas ocasiones han sido estudiadas por investigadores del Neotrópico.

En Colombia se registran 659 especies distribuidas en 156 géneros y 59 familias, incluidas 28 especies exóticas (23 del Viejo Mundo y 5 de Estados Unidos), pertenecientes a dos clases: Gastropoda que representa el 94.53% de la riqueza nacional (623 especies, 138 géneros y 53 familias) y Bivalvia con el 5.46% (36 especies, 18 géneros y 6 familias). A su vez, del total de especies, en el país se encuentran 293 (44.54%) endémicas (gasterópodos: 286, 97.61% Y bivalvos: 7, 2.38%), Y de ellas, 276 terrestres (94.19%) y 17 acuáticas (5.80%).
