About this book

Devoted to assessing the state of ocean and coastal governance, knowledge, and management, the Ocean Yearbook provides information in one convenient resource.

Articles provide multidisciplinary expert perspectives on contemporary issues. Each new volume draws on policy studies, international relations, international and comparative law, management, marine sciences, economics, and social sciences. Each volume contains key legal and policy instruments.

Ocean Yearbook, Volume 27 includes Spalding et al's new Open Access article on Protecting Marine Spaces, which has already caused something of a stir in marine conservation circles. The authors point out that the apparent rapid acceleration towards international targets for marine conservation may not, in fact, be following the details agreed by signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Although stressing the need for greater clarity over definitions, the article also identifies a clear mismatch between agreement and effort. By agreeing to protect both biodiversity and ecosystem services to people, the authors argue that nations should be investing in marine protection not only to remote ocean environments, but also close to population centres, where human needs, and marine threats, are greatest.
