Swifts travel thousands of miles every year, arriving in the UK in Spring when they breed and raise their young. The loss of natural breeding sites in recent years, due in part to the development of old buildings, has had a considerable impact on these birds. By providing them with a suitable nest box you can help to ensure their future success.
The Shropshire Swift Box is designed with a narrow entrance hole in the base. This design means that it is very unlikely to be inhabited by house sparrows or starlings who often use traditional style swift boxes. It is manufactured from plywood.
The box should be sited as high as possible, ideally close to the eaves of a building. It should also be placed in a position that provides the birds with a clear flight-path as swifts need to be able to freefall as they leave the nest. The box can be installed with screws (and wall plugs if needed) using the pre-drilled holes. Screws not provided. Occupancy of the nest box can be improved by playing Swift calls near to the nesting site.
