About this book

Language: Russian with bilingual summary in English and Russian

This treatment is the first monograph of the Umbelliferae/Apiaceae family of the Russian Federation in its current frontiers. There are 288 species of the Umbelliferae in Russia, belonging to 108 genera. Two genera (Rhizomatophora and Haloselinum) are described here as new for science, both being separated in the complex of Peucedanum s. ampl. Some other taxa, referred previously for Russian flora and being, however, not confirmed by reliable herbarium materials, are discussed in the comments. Traditional dichotomous keys to the genera and the species were compiled; in addition a multi-access computer key was elaborated in Russian, English, German and French. The characterization for each accepted genus contains the protologue data, synonyms (if they exist and if they are in any way related to the Russian species), descriptions, distribution data. The placement and affinities of each genus are discussed in historical retrospective and according to various (morphological and molecular) present-day data.

The largest Umbelliferae genera in the Russian flora are Bupleurum (26 species), Heracleum (19), Seseli (19), Angelica (18), Chaerophyllum (11l), and Pimpinella (9). At the same time 71 genera are represented in the flora of Russia by a single species per each genus. There is only one endemic Umbelliferae genus in Russia; that is Magadania with two species, distributed in the country’s north-east. The characterization of each species contains the protologue data, synonyms, typification of accepted names and synonyms, detailed descriptions, completed according to an unified set of characters, including fruit and vegetative anatomy and chromosome counts, the distribution according to the subjects of the Russian Federation (republics, territories, and provinces) and to the floristic regions. Diversity in morphological characters is illustrated by pictures. Based on collection studies in various herbaria, the maps of distribution (in contour form; for many species – more detailled for the Northern Caucasus). The maximal diversity in the Umbelliferae is observed in the Northern Causasus (168 species), while 99 species and 24 genera are not distributed spontaneously in the other big regions of the country. 54 area types were recognized for the Russian Umbelliferae, based on distribution inside and outside of Russia.
