About this book

Arunachal Pradesh is luxuriant in floristic diversity and falls under one of the World's biodiversity hot spot Indo-Burma. Due to its unique phytogeography, topography and favorable climatic conditions like high rainfall and ambient humidity the state represents a high degree of species diversity and a rich store house of various economically important plant species. Upper Subansiri is one of the 16 districts of Arunachal Pradesh, lies between 27-45 °N to 28-40 °S latitude and 93-12 °E to 94-30 °W longitude and spread over an area of 7032 sq.km adjoining to China Tibet border. There is no comprehensive account of district flora in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, therefore, it was felt to publish a detailed account of flowering plants of upper Subansiri district.

The present book is the first comprehensive taxonomic account of a remote district from Arunachal Pradesh embodies details of 1059 species and 10 varieties under 510 genera belonging to 146 families of the angiosperms. It provides the information on various aspects under introductory chapter like history, Topography, geology, climate people and population, chief tribes, previous botanical work and present study, vegetation and forest types, biotic interferences endemic species rare and endangered taxa and economically important plants etc. Floristic Diversity of Arunachal Pradesh also includes one rediscovery after over 100 years to new records to India and several new additions for the state. In the systematic enumeration of the taxa, Bentham and Hooker's system of classification has been followed with certain modifications based on recent knowledge. Genera and species in individual family are arranged alphabetically. Each species has been provided with latest nomenclature, original citation, basionym if any, local names, habitat and phenology. Alphabetical indices to botanical and vernacular names are also provided. Various colour photo plates related with the study as well as line drawings of many interesting species have also been included in the work for easy identification.
