About this book

Primates make up only five of the 60 species of land mammals known in Sri Lanka but they comprise an important component of the island's rich fauna. Sri Lankan Primates studies the different primate species and subspecies of the island-nation, in particular, their distribution, feeding, ecology and behaviour. Situating them in the context of the primates found in the Indian subcontinent, it presents a comprehensive summary of the scientific findings on the primates collected over the past several decades. It focuses on the lorises, macaques, purple-faced leaf monkeys and tufted grey langurs. Providing a glimpse into the history of the study on primates in Sri Lanka and examining the available scientific literature on them, it also deals with the threats faced by the primates which include some endangered species as well. It has a rich collection of photographs that illustrate many facets of the physical features and behaviour of the primates.
