This volume is a detailed narrative of the construction of the historical framework of earth history. It is not a standard recitation of authors, dates, and publications, but a conceptual journey starting in the 17th century. Rudwick is professor emeritus of history at the University of California, San Diego and affiliated scholar in the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. His many other books include Bursting the Limits of Time: The Reconstruction of Geohistory in the Age of Revolution and Worlds Before Adam: The Reconstruction of Geohistory in the Age of Reform, both also published by the University of Chicago Press.
