Martin Basse & Christian Franke: Marine Faunen aus dem frühen Unteremsium (Unterdevon) des Givonne-Oesling-Antiklinoriums (Luxemburg)
[Marine faunas of early Lower Emsian age (Lower Devonian) from the Givonne-Oesling Anticline (Luxembourg).] – Not much has been reported about fossils from the Devonian of Luxembourg (Ardenno-rhenish area), which is represented only by middle to late Lower Devonian beds. With the two sites Buregronn and Reideschbaach near Heiderscheid in the centre of the Givonne-Oesling Anticline which have yielded a rich and well preserved fauna of marine benthic invertebrates, we are able to put a new light on the stratigraphy and paleontology of this area. The fauna of the Reideschbaach site comes from a thin layer with small carbonatic concretions which are embedded in a series of more or less pelitic siltstones which almost lack fossils. Most striking features of this bed are the high number (11) of trilobite taxa, which herewith are identified for Luxembourg for the first time, as well as their character, which might be regarded as a Rhenish-Hercynian one. As to the trilobites newly described see above. Trilobite faunas of comparable structure have not yet been reported from other parts of the Ardennorhenish area, but similar associations are known from the Cantabrian Mts (Spain). Also worth to mention is the occurrence of some exotic fenestellids.

We regard these beds of the Reideschbaach site as very early Emsian in age. This assumption is supported by the occurrence of some relevant brachiopods as well as by trilobites. Comparison of the trilobites with some found in the Cantabrian Mts indicate an age which is represented by middle parts of the La Vid Fm.

The beds of the Buregronn site are slightly older than Reideschbaach and have yielded a small and fairly different trilobite fauna. It is remarquable that this fauna is strikingly closer to faunas coming from both Siegenian-Emsian boundary beds and early Emsian beds of the Rhenish Mts than to the taxa from the near Reideschbaach, stating the exceptional character of the latter.

Additionally to the discussion of some Homalonotinae from the Reideschbaach site we introduce Parahomalonotus planus? schrauti new subspecies from the Pragian of Morocco, which is characterized by a feature of the posterior margin of the pygidium.

In contrast to earlier assumptions, there is no evidence for occurrences of Dunopyge Drevermanni (Rud. Richter) in strata of Siegenian age. This species has been identified only in Lower Emsian beds.


Christian Franke: Die Klerf-Schichten (Unter-Devon) im Großherzogtum Luxemburg, in der Westeifel (Deutschland) und im Gebiet von Burg Reuland (Belgien): fazielle und biostratigraphische Deutungen

Previously-known as well as new localities of the Klerf beds in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the western Eifel have been faunally evaluated and are described. In this work it is attempted to document and to establish the character of the Klerf beds as a riverdominated delta by means of riverdominated facies studies . The simultaneously deposited fauna of the stagnant water areas within the delta plain and the marine shallow water fauna at the delta front and in the further prodelta as well as in reoccupied areas with pioneer „populations" are interpreted. Finally a model for the sedimentation process is proposed. Due to our results, the Klerf beds could be demarcated better against the Schüttburg beds and Krautscheid beds. This may lead to some small rectifications of the geological maps.


Christian Franke & Martin Poschmann: Arthropods and trace fossils from the Lower Devonian (Emsian) of the West Eifel region/Germany and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

Fossil-Lagerstätten in Lower Devonian marine to non-marine deltaic transitional facies from the Ardenno-Rhenish Massif are presented. Some fossil associations as well as morphological details of some arthropod remains are briefly described, including the scorpion-like postabdomen of the eurypterid Rhenopterus diensti and the type B genital appendage of a Parahughmilleria hefteri specimen. The latter is the first eurypterid from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. A centipede myriapod, the arthropod trackway Diplichnites gouldi, and the "fish" swimming trail Undichna isp. are for the first time recorded from the Lower Devonian of the Ardenno-Rhenish Massif and the possible producers of the trace fossils are discussed.
