From the preface:
"A medicinal tree is a plant from which substances of medical value can be distilled or extracted. lndia's rich natural wealth and species diversity of such trees has been a key element in their extensive use in India's traditional herbal treatment systems. Medicinal trees are a major resource base for the traditional medicine and herbal industry providing livelihood and health security to a large segment of lndian population.
In recent years, an increased emphasis on use of herbal drugs all over the world has resulted in substantial loss of medicinal plant species from natural forests due to unsustainable extraction. This highly precarious situation needs to be addressed immediately by forestry scientists, research institutions, forest departments and the herbal drug industry of the country. Efforts have been taken by agencies like the National Medicinal Plant Board, New Delhi and the lndian Council of Forestry Research and Education, Dehradun for conservation and sustainable utilization of medicinal tree species. However, plantation of medicinal trees has not gained the required momentum in the country compared to widespread boom of on-field cultivation of short rotation medicinal plants by farmers in many states.
In the present book we have incorporated information about 43 important medicinal trees of lndia on botanical characteristics for correct identification, distribution and ecological requirements, therapeutic uses of different parts and modes of propagation."
