"In this study, we have investigated the biodiversity and distribution of earthworm fauna in northeastern Uttar Pradesh. I have reported that out of 11 species recorded, 7 species (Amynthas morrisi, Dichogaster bolaui, Eutyphoeus waltoni, Lampito mauritii, Metaphire posthuma, Perionyx excavatus and Ramiella bishambari are present at the maximum number of sites and exhibit a wide range of tolerance to edaphic factors. The presence of species in particular habitat and its absence from other habitats
shows the species specific distribution of earthworms in different pedoecosysterns.
The densities of earthworms observed in different soils were also correlated with physico-chemical attributes of the soil. Soil moisture, pH, organic carbon and organic nitrogen play important roles in the distribution of earthworms. Soil pH in this study varied from neutral to moderately alkaline (7.0 to 7.7). Distribution of earthworms was not significant between habitats but within habitats the distribution pattern of the earthworm species are significant. The factors that influence the diversity of an earthworm community at a given locality, apart from the type of soil, climate and the available organic resources, also depends upon the land use pattern and disturbances.
Data emerging from this study book give an understanding of the earthworm population, abundance and diversity as well as correlation with physico-chemical parameters of their habitat. Agriculture may have a positive effect on earthworms when it improves their food supply, which can happen if recycling of nutritious crop residues, addition of organic manure to the soil, or loosening of the soil occur to an extent that facilitates burrowing by earthworms."
