The Nokrek Biosphere Reserve located at the tri-junction of the three administrative districts of the Gare Hills of Meghalaya is one of the twelve biosphere reserves in India. It is a National Citrus Gene Sanctuary-cum-Biosphere Reserve for preserving
the rich native diversity of wild citrus and muss species.
The present project was proposed with an aim to scientifically inventorizing and documenting the rich faunal resources of the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve. The taxonomic studies of various animal groups were taken up as per the expertise available at North Eastern Regional Centre, Zoological Survey of India, Shillong. All together 8 surveys were conducted between November 2007 and June 2009 after getting necessary permission from the State Forest Department, Govt. of Meghalaya. A total of 1934 examples and 95 vials of various faunal groups were studied, resulting in 17 species of Rhizopoda; 27 species of Rotifera; 28 species of Cladocera; 11 species of aquatic hemiptera; 89 species of Lepidoptera; 54 species of Pisces; 29 species of Amphibia and 9 species of Reptilia.
