About this book

Language: English

From the foreword:

"Gujarat is one of the wildlife-rich states of India. It is not only outstanding from the view-point of overall diversity of wildlife, but also from the view-point of certain unique aspects related to wildlife. Such aspects cannot be seen or only rarely seen in the wilderness outside this state. Some examples are; Asiatic Lion living in association with the Maldharis in Gir Forest, Flamingo-city in the Great Rann of Kachchh, a well-settled and healthy population of lndian Wild Ass in the Little Rann of Kachchh, the world's largest harrier roost in the grassland of Velavadar, the occurrence of endemic White-naped Tit and rare and migratory Grey Hipocolius in some restricted areas of Kachchh.

As the state celebrates its Golden Jubilee (Swarnim Gujarat) Year, it is a very apt occasion to present this book to the people. This is particularly so because wildlife conservation in Gujarat has been able to attain incredible heights due to the great conservation ethos which the people of the state have.

This book is unique in being a window to the wildlife of the state. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it speaks more through pictures than words and justifies the saying that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. Nonetheless, the book is not devoid of words. The captions given are brief yet expressive. Each picture is adequately explained and tells about one or the other aspect of the state's wildlife. In addition, the book also gives information about important wildlife habitats like the Rann of Kachchh, moist deciduous forests, dry deciduous and thorn forests, grasslands, wetlands and mangroves."
