Empirical geomorphology provides the observational evidence from which theoretical considerations may be developed. Theoretical geomorphology, on the other hand, combines the available empirical knowledge with the application of general physical principles to arrive, by a process of generalization and abstraction, at the formulation of theories which in turn can suggest goals for further empirical studies.
