About this book

The Great Bear Rainforest is the fabled region that stretches up the rugged Pacific coast from the top of Vancouver Island to southern Alaska. A longtime resident of the area, award-winning photographer and conservationist Ian McAllister takes us on a deeply personal journey from the headwaters of the Great Bear Rainforest's unexplored river valleys down to where the ocean meets the rainforest and finally to the hidden depths of the offshore world.

Along the way, we meet the spectacular wildlife that inhabits the Great Bear Rainforest – in a not-so-unusual week, McAllister quietly observes twenty-seven bears fishing for salmon, three of which are the famed pure white grizzlies, Kermodes. McAllister introduces us to the First Nations people who have lived there for millennia and have become his close friends and allies, and to the scientists conducting groundbreaking research and racing against time to protect the rainforest from massive energy projects.

Rich with full-color photographs of the wolves, whales, and other creatures who make the rainforest their home, Great Bear Wild is a stunning celebration of this legendary area.

"[Ian McAllister] combines stunning photography of the natural world-lush underwater reefs, Kermode cubs feeding on salmon, spyhopping orcas, preening puffins-with stories from his explorations and perspectives from the indigenous people who have lived here for tens of thousands of years. The result is a convincing testament for a place on the planet largely untouched by the modern world, and a prayer to keep it that way."
– Christian Martin, Cascadia Weekly

"Through breathtaking photographs and moving prose, McAllister's Great Bear Wild presents a compelling case for the urgent need to protect, in perpetuity, one of the most magnificent ecosystems on the planet-the increasingly threatened Great Bear Rainforest."
– Jane Goodall, UN Messenger of Peace

"Great Bear Wild is an urgent, eloquent call-to-arms from the heart of the BC coast that pays tribute to the staggering beauty and diversity of this unique region."
– John Vaillant, author of The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival

"McAllister's remarkable photographs from years spent deep in the Great Bear Rainforest give unprecedented access to one of the planet's wildest, most remote places."
– Paul Nicklen, National Geographic photographer

"As Ian McAllister shows in this stunning book, through his photos and compelling narrative, this is a battle that pits apocalupical foreces of ignorance and greed against the welfare of our children and the rest of humankind. Great Bear Wild vividly domonstrates the high stakes in this battle."
– Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Senior Attorney, Natural Resources Defense Council
