About this book

Language: German

When field researchers began their first observations on Ethiopian hamadryas baboons 50 years ago, no one knew how diverse the social life of these desert baboons actually is. It soon became clear that the behavior of baboons differs in significant respects from that of other types of baboons, and also that habitat plays a key role in determining social behaviour. In this book the extant representatives of the genus Theropithecus, Papio and Mandrill are compared for the first time. Based on the extensive data available, which was obtained both in the field and in zoos, an image is created for each type, which reflects the enormous adaptability of baboons to the climatic and environmental conditions of their respective habitat.
