About this book

From the introduction:

"The classic work of Johnson and Halbert (1902) on the beetles of Ireland has been the main authoritative source of information on the Irish fauna for almost a hundred years. There was an early attempt to update this work (O'Mahony 1929b) but the great mass of literature which has appeared under the heading of Irish Coleoptera since 1902 remains for the most part uncollated. The clear need for an update of Johnson and Halbert's work using modem nomenclature and with up-to-date literature references, has been apparent for some time. There is an additional need for much of the material in Irish collections to be re-examined and re-determined. The latter is a mammoth task and one which will have to be addressed over a longer time scale. Many families of Irish Coleoptera have not had a modem interpretation and the status of many species is uncertain in the light of changes since Johnson and Halbert's time. It is not the intention of the authors of the present list to provide more than a framework for future revisions but where doubt about species' identities or assignations exists, this is indicated by annotation.

The List is partly based on Pope (1977) which is currently the most recent complete British Isles List dealing with Coleoptera. However, a number of substantial phylogenetic revisions have been brought forward since Pope which makes the latter rather out-of-date. The present List has therefore drawn upon recent Continental Lists incorporating proposed changes to both the layout and to the accepted names of individual taxa, including Lohse and Lucht (1989, 1992) and Hansen (1996). [...] Those species not included in the Irish List of Johnson and Halbert (1902) are indicated in the current List by a + sign in the left-hand margin. The species so indicated are given an annotation which refers to the first literature report of that species from Ireland. [...] The List covers species known to have been native or naturalised in Ireland, and therefore includes several now thought to be extinct, unlike the list of Carabidae given by Speight et al. (1983) where this category was excluded. [...]"
