About this book

From the introduction:

"These articles on entomologists in Ireland up to about 1950 do not pretend to be balanced or scholarly studies but are memoirs with background information and personal interpretations. Sources of the memoir aspect were my recollections of entomologists who were active in the 1930s and 1940s and of their reminiscences of earlier entomologists back to the 1890s and the contents of letters from them (now deposited in the National Museum of Ireland). The chief of these were E.S.A. Baynes. E. Bullock, P.P. Graves, J.N. Halbert. A.A. Lisney, E. O'Mahony, and A.W. Stelfox. Much of the background information was accumulated in the 1940s while I was compiling an annotated and classified bibliography of Irish entomology (mainly while ostensibly invigilating examinations in the Medical School at Trinity College, Dublin). That bibliography was later incorporated in A Bibliography of Irish Entomology by J.G. Ryan, J.P. O'Connor and B.P. Beime. It may be consulted for information on what the people who are mentioned in the following articles published on Irish insects."
