About this book

Language: English

From the introduction:

"The malacological collection of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) is unique, as it is the largest collection in Southeast Asia. The departmental collection of mollusca are the most comprehensive. Developed over more than two centuries, the mollusca collection in the National Zoological Collections (NZC) serves as the depository of primary type specimens for several Southeast Asian countries and also a National Designated Repository for Zoological Collections of the country.

Cephalopods are the most highly organized molluscs and are the most accomplished swimmers other than fish. Their size varies from minute to 55 m long and 2.5 m diameter. The class is represented by 650 species belonging to nautilus, cuttlefish, squid, and octopuses. There are 65 species under the class Cephalopoda reported so far from the Indian Ocean region (Roper et al. 1984) of which 64 species are reported by the Zoological Survey India (ZSI). The collections present at the ZSI is based on two primary sources viz. inherited from the Indian Museum and obtained from its own surveys conducted by the scientists and naturalists of the department.

This paper reviews the identified cephalopods in the collection of the NZC at the ZSI, Kolkata, India."
