About this book

The genus Pseudapanteles (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Microgastrinae) is a moderately diverse group of parasitoid wasps widely distributed in the New World, from 45°N in Canada to 34°S in Argentina. Many undescribed species remain in collections, mainly from South America. The present paper deals with all previously known species, and adds 25 new from Area de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG), Costa Rica. All 36 species are assigned to three newly created species-groups, and a dichotomous key, brief descriptions (generated by Lucid 3.5 software) and extensive illustrations of every species are provided. DNA barcodes were obtained for 30 species (83%), and provide a foundation for future study of the genus beyond ACG. Host records (known for only 25% of the species) show that the genus comprises mostly solitary parasitoids of caterpillars of several families of small Lepidoptera (Crambidae, Elachistidae, Gelechiidae, Incurvariidae, Sesiidae, and Tineidae). This paper is a continuation of a series studying the whole fauna of Microgastrinae in ACG.
