About this book

Language: French

A few hundred meters from a small village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Châteauneuf-Val-Saint-Donnat and its 500 inhabitants, for years an old man patiently planted an arboretum of hundreds of trees, reviving in his retirement a very old family tradition on this arid land.

Jean-Baptiste de Vilmorin is the last botanic adventurer from a long line that began in the eighteenth century when Philippe-Victoire Lévêque de Vilmorin came to Lorraine on horseback to learn about plants, nature and medicine with Buffon and other great naturalist scholars before launching a successful career in the seed trade.

From father to son, during seven generations, from Louis XV to the Second World War and through the Revolution and the Commune, his descendants collected seeds, improved plant varieties, acclimatized flowers, trees and vegetables, tentatively discovered the laws of inheritance, and traveled around the world. Over time, they build a family business that became famous across the globe.
This book tells their story.
