Aves de Asturias is an identification guide to the birds of the Principality of Asturias, an autonomous community in north-west Spain. It describes and illustrates 283 species regularly occurring in the territory, both residents and migrants, and both those breeding in the summer and overwintering there.

The descriptions are clear, concise and focused on morphological characters, plumage (with indications of geographical variations – subespecies – and variation across seasons, age and sex), and behavior that can help recognize and differentiate between each species; similar species are on the same page or facing pages for easy comparison.

Nearly 750 high-quality illustrations represent all treated species, usually in adult and juvenile plumages, firstly with their sexual and / or seasonal variations, but also the typical behaviour (resting or in flight) that you are more likely to observe them in. The species entries provide updated information on the status, abundance and distribution of each, reflected on a map, as well as their habitat preferences.

The introductory chapters provide an overview of the physical geography of the land, its biodiversity, habitats for birds of interest, the characteristics of the avifauna of Asturias, natural areas and protected bird species in the region and a practical guide to 16 places of ornithological interest. Two appendices list 112 species and 10 subspecies that are casual or accidental visitors, and 3 other species that have disappeared..

Guía de identificación dedicada a las aves del Principado de Asturias, describe e ilustra las 283 especies de presencia regular en el territorio de la comunidad autónoma, tanto residentes como migrantes en paso, estivales reproductoras e invernantes.

Las descripciones son claras, concisas y centradas en los caracteres morfológicos, de plumaje (con variaciones geográficas – subespecies – , estacionales, por edad y sexo) y de conducta que permiten reconocer cada especie y diferenciarla de otras similares; las más parecidas entre sí aparecen en la misma página o en páginas enfrentadas para facilitar la comparación.

Casi 750 ilustraciones de gran calidad representan todas las especies tratadas, por lo general en los plumajes de adulto y juvenil, el primero con sus variaciones sexuales y/o estacionales, y en la actitud (posadas o en vuelo) en la que es más frecuente observarlas. Las fichas de especies aportan información actualizada sobre el estatus, la abundancia y la distribución de cada una, reflejada en un mapa, así como sobre sus preferencias de hábitat.

Los capítulos introductorios ofrecen una visión de conjunto de la geografía física del territorio, su biodiversidad, los hábitat de interés para las aves, las caracteristicas de la avifauna de Asturias, los espacios naturales y las especies de aves protegidos en la región y una guía práctica de 16 lugares de interés ornitológico. Dos apéndices relacionan 112 especies y 10 subespecies ocasionales y accidentales, y otras 3 especies desaparecidas.
