Chinese Herbal Drugs Atlas, Volume 1 is the first part of a 4-volume work. This volume includes ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms and a small amount of dicots. Each volume includes about 300 kinds of Chinese medicinal plants, and the complete work describes nearly 1 200 kinds.

For each plants, the books gives the commonly used botanical terminology, common terminology and common pharmacy in traditional Chinese medicine. The medicinal part of the plant is divided into: root drugs, stem medicines, skin medicines, leave medicines, flowers medicines, fruit medicines, seeds drugs, and medicines based on the whole plant.

Each drugs plant is described in turn, including its family and genus, herbal names, family names of various original plants, botanical name, Latin name and medicine area, a detailed description of the morphological characteristics, distribution of the environment of the region where the plant grows, the harvesting season of herbs, harvesting methods and simple processing methods, the main character, taste and medicinal properties, indications, dosage, drug toxicity, compatibility, usage taboos, and precautions.

《中國中藥植物圖鑑》按植物學的分類高低分為四冊，第一冊主要包括蕨類植物、裸子植物及被子植物中少量的雙子葉植物；第二、三、四冊是被子植物，其中第二、三冊主要是雙子葉植物，第四冊主要是單子葉植物和少量的雙子葉植物。每一冊約收錄300種中藥植物，全套共收集近1200多種。

第一冊正文之前的總論，包括常用植物名詞解釋、常見中藥學名詞解釋及常見中藥炮製學。正文按照植物的入藥部位不同，分為：根類藥、莖類藥、皮類藥、葉類藥、花類藥、果類藥、種子類藥、全草類藥八類。

每一類藥中的植物又是以其科屬依次描述，內容包括中草藥名稱、各種原植物的科名、植物名、拉丁學名及入藥部位，並詳細描述植物的形態特徵、植物的生長環境和分布地區，以及藥材的採收時節、採收方法及簡單的加工方法，主要的性味和藥性歸經、功用主治、用法與用量、該藥的毒性、配伍、使用禁忌等注意事項。

《中國中藥植物圖鑑》作者為大陸著名中醫學者，歷經多年跋山涉水，負笈中國各省拍攝數千種藥草生態，並加以翔實說明用法及功效，是中醫學界難得一見圖文並茂之鉅著。
