This year-round butterfly habitat is designed to be used as a feeder in the summer and then as an over-wintering shelter for hibernating butterflies during the colder months.
The box is made from slow-seasoned timber that is painted with an attractive water based green paint. A flip-down tray at the front of the box contains a food tray and nectar pot which can be filled with ripe fruit and sugar water during the summer and will provide local butterflies with a valuable food source. During the winter the tray can be folded back up to create an overwintering home for non-migratory species. The box contains dry bark but you can also add cut straw or pine cones which will create useful niches for other types of insects such as lacewings or ladybirds.
The Butterfly Biome should be sited in a sunny and sheltered location, out of the prevailing winds. The box also comes with a free butterfly identification and life cycle guide.
