About this book

Language: French

It is out of the office whose windows overlook the Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes in Paris that Bernadette Lizet begins her investigations. Between 1989 and 2014, ten "petits terrains", little essays, mark twenty-five years of observations and analysis, conducted alone or in teams. Through a process and method which fall within the realm of participating ethnology, it offers a different perspective on the museum, its garden, its zoo and the men who are its soul – gardeners, trainers, and researchers. The history of the precursors of ethnobotany, the daily life of the great garden, the ambivalent status of nature in the city: a new and curious look, an ethnology of close and intimate, to better understand the living, its wealth and fragility.
