About this book

Language: French

A small flora, even that of a single town, deserves the attention of botanists in its department. Rather than focusing on the flora of Sarthe, France, at large, the author chose an original approach in that he wanted to investigate fully and passionately his private domain, the commune of Saint-Jean-de-la -Motte in the Loiret department in north-central France. This allowed him to describe the wide variety of habitats and vegetation. He was able over years of assiduous exploration, to meticulously note changes in, persistence of, or else the disappearance of certain species and arrival of other invasive species. It is therefore a portrait that depicts perfectly the present situation of this territory.

Upheavals in agriculture (the disappearance of many small properties, consolidation, irreversible abandonment, indiscriminate use of herbicides and pesticides, rampant urbanism, the desired or unwanted arrival of many exotic plants, and now global warming and all its consequences) are taken into account in the author's conclusions. The long study of this area involved perseverance, meticulousness and a desire to synthesize knowledge. The 690 species of his community owe much to him.

It is hoped that this work will be followed by many others covering conditions, industries, municipalities, or even a single site as for beautiful mosses and liverworts of Païolive of Vincent HUGONNOT. Anything that raises awareness of our rich heritage by describing it in detail can only be congratulated and encouraged, as we know more on borrowed time. Once, teachers and clergymen were spending their lives, time and passion on this. Today, only rare "amateur" botanists devote all their time to this insatiable need to search, discover, and learn.
