This book is the epitome of ethnobotanical cultural heritage of the province of Ávila (Castilla and León, Spain), its subject matter is the knowledge and popular beliefs about the plants and the environment, a richly diverse and extensive subject area. The book is profusely illustrated with 800 color photographs, showing both plant species and ethnobotanical uses.

The introductory part has different sections explaining what the science of ethnobotany is and what it deals with, describing the vegetation of Ávila and different biogeographical regions, the toponymy of plants, the uses of plants and which plants are most used in the culture of Ávila, and how to preserve this knowledge. It is followed by an extensive illustrated catalog of the vascular plants (with its popular names in Ávila and its scientific name) grouped into about 50 categories of ethnobotanical uses.

It is followed by an interesting first annex devoted to photographs illustrating the varied ethnobotanical uses in Ávila, from ancestral, to their use in landscapes and villages, food, medicine, rural technology and construction; their importance in holidays, religion and legends; and includes popular gardening and monumental trees. In Annex II the rich vegetation landscapes of the Sierra de Gredos is described, giving vernacular names of the flora and vegetation toponymy, the naturalists that have come to Gredos, cuisine and botany, etc. Annex III explains the survey model used to collect ethnobotanical information in the field. Annex IV is a list of names collected during botanical and ecological mapping in the province of Ávila. Finally, the book ends with a bibliography and two indices, the first one listing popular and scientific names of plants, and the second a thematic index.

Este libro trata del compendio del acervo cultural etnobotánico, es decir, la materia que trata del conocimiento y las creencias populares sobre las plantas y el medio, profusamente diverso y extenso de la provincia de Ávila (Castilla y León, España). Está ricamente ilustrado con 800 fotografías a color, tanto de las especie vegetales como de los propios usos etnobotánicos.

La parte introductoria tienen diversos apartados dedicados a explicar qué es y de qué trata la ciencia de la Etnobotánica; a describir el paisaje vegetal de Ávila y sus distintas regiones biogeográficas; sus dominios de vegetación actuales; la toponimia vegetal; los usos de las plantas y cuáles son las plantas más usadas en la cultura abulense; la forma de conservar estos saberes. Le sigue un extenso catálogo ilustrado de las plantas vasculares (con sus nombres populares abulenses y su nombre científico) de las que se han recogido usos etnobotánicos de lo más variado, agrupados en unas 50 categorías.

Le sigue un interesantísimo primer anexo dedicado a ilustrar con fotografías los variopintos usos etnobotánicos recogidos en Ávila, desde los más ancestrales, pasando por los que modelan los paisajes y pueblos, la alimentación, los usos medicinales, la tecnología rural tanto de aperos como constructiva, los usos festivos, religiosos y legendarios, la jardinería popular, los árboles monumentales y los informantes. En el anexo II se describe el rico paisaje vegetal de la Sierra de Gredos, los nombres vernáculos de la flora y la toponimia vegetal, los naturalistas que ha recorrido Gredos, gastronomía y Botánica, etc. El anexo III nos explica el modelo de encuesta utilizado para recopilar sobre el terreno la información etnobotánica. El anexo IV es una relación de topónimos botánicos y ecológicos recopilados en la cartografía de la provincia de Ávila Para acabar tenemos la bibliografía y dos índices, el primero de nombres de plantas populares y científicos y el segundo temático.
