About this book

Plant bugs in the Renodaeus genus group form a monophyletic part of the tribe Ceratocapsini in the subfamily Orthotylinae. All taxa are restricted to the New World, with most occurring from the southern United States to northern South America. Revision of the Ceratocapsine Renodaeus group: Marinonicoris, Pilophoropsis, Renodaeus, and Zanchisme, with descriptions of four new genera (Heteroptera, Miridae, Orthotylinae) comprises eight genera, including four described as new, and 48 species, including 26 described as new. A number of taxa within the group are strongly myrmecomorphic and exhibit considerable sexual dimorphism, with females often strongly brachypterous. The combination of a sharply truncate, basally carinate head, the dark dorsal coloration, the often strongly constricted hemelytral margins, and the white or silvery scalelike dorsal setae usually in the form of tight bands or scattered patches, creates an overall antlike appearance that is impressive, even within the Miridae. Although many members of this group are host specific, most are thought to be opportunistic predators seeking injured, dead, or dying soft-bodied arthropods as prey.
