It is said that to understand a garden one needs a plan, a description, and a plant list. Vergnaud’s L’Art de Créer les Jardins includes them all. And for good measure he adds a bibliography of important garden theory and practice books that had proceeded his. It is not a sign of misplaced erudition, but an acknowledgment of the history and traditions from which his book grew. No other book of the period included such a quartet of information. After reading this book you may not necessarily understand a garden any better, but you will certainly appreciate the monumental task involved in creating one. This is reason enough to read his book.
