About this book

Language: Italian

Known to all and frightening to some, spiders are an integral part of various human cultures: with positive roles in legends that bestow them even with the creation of the world, or negative roles as representatives of evil forces. Although their real danger is limited to a few species, it has given rise to a deep-seated fear, and they have survived centuries of persecution that were ongoing until only a few decades ago. Much less is known instead about the unique characteristics of these invertebrates, which occupy a space different from all the other animals of similar size. They can save energy and resources with outstanding efficiency, sacrifice and regenerate portions of their the body to defend themselves, produce a silk with exceptional characteristics, depend for their movements on the pressure of their internal fluids, and resort to digestion outside of their body. Most, but not all, are exclusively predatorial, and the webs they build are extremely susceptible to vibration, giving a complex and effective way to catch prey, but also to escape in various ways predators and parasites. Courtship and mating are particularly elaborate and females effectively select the sperm that will fertilize their eggs. They can use and carry instruments, occupy all terrestrial environments and can moving through the air supported by long silky wires. They can also be used as indicators of environmental quality and to control insects harmful to the human economy. Knowing spiders can teach one many fascinating aspects of ecology and ethology, which are within the reach of anyone who wants to study these unique animals.
